In the heart of Germany, the city of Essen held its local election on September 14, 2025, alongside the election of the Integration Council and the election to the Ruhr Parliament (Regional Association Ruhr). Over 3,500 volunteers played a crucial role in the preparations and on the day of the election, ensuring a smooth and efficient voting process.

Mayor Thomas Kufen expressed his appreciation, acknowledging their indispensable contribution in the first round election. The press release regarding the election was updated on September 17, 2025, and the city administration has assured that sufficient volunteers are available for the upcoming runoff election.

As no candidate for Mayor reached the necessary majority in the first round, a runoff election is scheduled for Sunday, 28. September, 2025. The candidates expected to run in the runoff are Thomas Kufen (CDU), Julia Klewin (SPD), and Andreas Lojewski (AfD), with Andreas Lojewski closely competing for the second spot.
