City platform initiates a sequence of workshops focused on the practical advancement of waste prevention strategy

On September 16, 2025, the development process for a waste reduction concept begins in the city of Essen. This initiative, aimed at fostering sustainability and reducing waste, marks an important step towards a greener future for the city.

The development process will be guided by the city administration, under the leadership of Mayor Thomas Kufen, in collaboration with the Wuppertal Institute, Prognos AG, and INFA GmbH. A series of thematic workshops will take place in early October, inviting citizens, business representatives, civil society, and municipal institutions to contribute their ideas and insights.

Registration for these workshops is now open. Interested parties are encouraged to participate and help shape a more sustainable future for Essen. The details for the workshops, including dates, themes, and locations, have been previously announced.

The first workshop, scheduled for October 1, will focus on public administration as a role model and pioneer in waste reduction. The following day, October 2, will see the second workshop, which will focus on strengthening resource cycles. On October 6, the second workshop will delve into reducing packaging waste, while October 7 will address reducing food waste. The fifth workshop, scheduled for October 9, will focus on waste reduction and sustainability in the construction sector.

To provide new inspiration, the cities of Hattingen, Kassel, and Erlangen will be presented at the workshops, reflecting their respective sustainability and waste management initiatives.

Each workshop will involve intensive small group work, evaluating measures, discussing them, and assessing their value. Registration and further information about exact times can be found on the city portal website: www.our website/avk. The registration deadline is Wednesday, 24 September.

These workshops serve as a platform for shaping a more sustainable future for Essen. Best practice examples from other cities will be presented at the workshops for inspiration. Join us in this journey towards a greener, more sustainable Essen.
