City of Saint John Initiates Closure of Splash Pads, Urges Conservation of Water Due to Persistent Dry Conditions
In the city of Saint John, New Brunswick, authorities are appealing to residents to voluntarily reduce water usage due to an extended dry spell and below-average rainfall levels. This initiative is aimed at ensuring adequate water pressure and supply for emergency services such as firefighting and healthcare, as well as safeguarding the long-term sustainability of the municipal water system.
The City of Saint John has taken several measures to conserve water. Municipal vehicles and equipment washing has been stopped, and residents are asked to turn off taps when brushing teeth or shaving, not to water lawns, gardens, or outdoor plants, and not to wash their vehicles at home. The city's splash pads have been shut down, and non-critical hydrant flushing has been halted.
To further conserve water, residents are encouraged to promptly fix any plumbing or irrigation system leaks, use dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads, and avoid filling swimming pools or hot tubs. Power-washing driveways, decks, or buildings is also not recommended.
The city considers water conservation a shared responsibility and asks residents to take shorter showers to help conserve water. By conserving water now, the city aims to reduce the risk of more severe, mandatory restrictions in the future.
Saint John Water will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates. Residents are reminded that these actions are taken to safeguard the vital water resource for everyone in Saint John. The city encourages everyone to do their part in conserving water to protect this essential resource for the future.
