Remembering the Past: A Call for Digital Remembrance, as Advocated by Mayor Boch
On the 86th anniversary of the Reichspogromnacht in Germany, Pforzheim and the Jewish community gather in remembrance. This annual event, held at the Volksbankhaus on November 11, 2024, marks a solemn moment in history that requires our ongoing attention.
Mayor Peter Boch underscored the gravity of this remembrance: "To learn from the past, we must remember the Shoah, a horrific atrocity wrought by humans that claimed the lives of millions. As the last eyewitnesses of this tragedy are dwindling, the responsibility of preserving their stories falls on us all."
Student Zia Al-Qasim, from the Reuchlin-Gymnasium, presented the concept of "Digital Testimony", an initiative aimed at preserving the eyewitness accounts of Holocaust survivors. Al-Qasim emphasized the importance of continued remembrance: " Their stories must be heard, and their suffering never forgotten. Digital technology offers us a vital tool to ensure these testimonies are preserved and accessible for future generations."
The students' findings revealed the potential of interactive digital testimony, demonstrated by the project Testimony 360: People and Places. This innovative tool, developed by the Holocaust Education Trust and USC Shoah Foundation, enables students to interact with digital holograms of Holocaust survivors, even when they've passed away. The project, enhanced by VR headsets, immerses learners in the survivors' experiences and key sites associated with their testimonies.
The memorial service was accompanied by musical performances and a prayer led by Rabbi Moshe Yudelevitz, followed by the joint laying of a wreath at the memorial on the "Synagogue Square." The event, organized by the city, Jewish community, and local schools, is a testament to the collective responsibility of preserving the wounds of history.
