Grevenbroich Faces Severe Thunderstorm: Fire Department Responds
Grevenbroich, Germany, experienced a severe thunderstorm on May 31st, 2025, causing numerous incidents across the city. The Fire Department Grevenbroich swiftly responded to the situation, mobilizing over 90 firefighters to tackle the challenges posed by the storm.
The storm hit hardest in the districts of Elsen, Orken, and Noithausen, with Merkatorstraße in Elsen being one of the most affected areas. Firefighters worked in collaboration with city operations to quickly remove hazards and address the issues. At around 09:50, firefighters were dispatched to Merkatorstraße to deal with a flood in an elevator shaft.
In addition to this, water entered the kitchen and technical rooms of a senior center on Matthias-Esser Street. Firefighters were occupied with pumping out flooded basements and streets throughout the city.
A command center was set up at the fire station in Grevenbroich to manage the incidents, with all units of the Grevenbroich fire department involved in the response. Firefighters from the Gustorf/Gindorf unit in Krefeld also responded with the locally stationed catastrophe fire truck.
