City of Artesia Names Abel Avalos as the New City Manager

In a significant move, the Artesia City Council has appointed Abel Avalos as its new City Manager. A seasoned professional with over 29 years of experience in both public and private sector development and management, Avalos will officially join the city on October 8, 2024.

Avalos' career has spanned various roles across Planning, Redevelopment, Housing, and Public Utilities. Most recently, he served as the Director of Community Development in Lakewood. Prior to his appointment as Artesia's City Manager, Avalos has also served the communities of Bell Gardens and Anaheim, as well as holding municipal roles in the cities of La Puente and Pico Rivera in California.

Avalos' private sector experience includes real estate development, having worked as a Land Acquisition Manager for Irvine-based John Laing Homes. This diverse background is expected to bring a unique perspective to his new role, where he will manage the city's daily operations, implement policies set by the City Council, and collaborate with residents and stakeholders.

Avalos is highly active in professional and civic organisations. He has served as a Board Member for the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP), the Bell Gardens Chamber of Commerce, and Neighborhood Housing Services of Orange County (NHSOC), among others.

Avalos earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from California State University, Long Beach, and his Master's Degree in Public Policy from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. His education, coupled with his extensive experience, makes him well-equipped to lead Artesia into the future.

The City Council made the appointment on September 9, 2024, and Avalos is eager to begin his tenure. He looks forward to working with the community to continue Artesia's growth and development.
