Berlin's City Mission on the Hunt for New Shelter Property

The Berlin City Mission finds itself back at square one in its hunt for a new property to house a 24/7 shelter for the homeless. Over the past five months, they've been butt heads with the Berlin real estate market, searching for a solution to continue the previous round-the-clock accommodation.

After locating a potential property, an agreement was reached with the landlord as to the property's future use, triggering the start of intensive preparatory work and arrangements for half of the 88 residents to move in. "Unfortunately," explains the Stadtmission, "the landlord surprised us on the day of planned usage by renting the property to someone else."

The City Mission remains hopeful, expressing their readiness to operate a 24/7 shelter should a suitable property become available or be provided by the Senate. They reiterate their priority, stating, "Creating possibilities and improving prospects for those in need is our top priority in our city."

On Thursday, State Secretary Aziz Bozkurt (SPD) updated the Social Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, revealing that the shelter would not launch as planned due to circumstantial reasons.

Thrown a curveball, Berlin City Mission now seeks alternative properties to keep their 24/7 shelter for homeless individuals operational. Churches in the city have come forward, offering their spaces for temporary accommodations, displaying their unwavering commitment to combating homelessness in social affairs.

While the City Mission's search for alternate properties in the Berlin real estate market may prove challenging, their resolve to support those in need remains steadfast.
