City Stuttgart's Perplexing Bike Racks: Seven Unnecessary Additions
Stuttgart inhabitants have been grumbling for years about city hall relinquishing parking spaces. Their frustration is now heightened due to the installation of seven pointless bike racks in Weilimdorf. Local car owners on Solitudestraße are furious, given the bike stands have cropped up on a previous parking strip that once accommodated four vehicles.

Free Voters city councilor Michael Schrade (47) claims, "It would seem that there was no sufficient distance between the cycle path and parking spaces after the cycle path was widened."
The city responded by installing seven steel bike stands, two for cargo bikes and five for regular bikes. Yet, the handy bike parking solution remains a mystery, for bicycles are scarcely ever seen at the rack.
The price tag of this puzzling construction has not been publicly disclosed. City hall failed to provide a comment.
Councillor Schrade snapshots the empty bike racks. He mumbles, "It is reasonable that the car spaces had to yield to a wider cycle path. Nevertheless, the space could have been utilized more sensibly, perhaps by planting trees."

Just a couple of months ago, Stuttgart's civil engineering department faced criticism due to a similar planning oversight: removing numerous parking spaces surrounding the market hall (S-Mitte) and subsequently erecting controversial design elements such as seating pebbles and benches without backrests for 50,000 euros.
The Taxpayers' Association (Bund der Steuerzahler) queried this "urban facelift" in their latest report, "The seating stones with a cold surface and benches without backrests do not entice lingerers. This should have been evident to those responsible for the project, especially since comfortable benches are readily available nearby."
- The mayor of Stuttgart-Weilimdorf's previously vacant bike racks, installed to encourage cycling, seem to be overlooked by cyclists, as noted by Councillor Michael Schrade.
- The decline in parking spaces for cars, replaced with bike racks, has resulted in frustration among local drivers. Conversely, the nearby parking lot in Stuttgart-Weilimdorf sees more bicycles than the newly installed bike racks.
- In the absence of specific information from city council, the cost of constructing these bike racks remains unknown.
- To garner insight into the unused bike racks, it may be beneficial to examine user behavior in the area and assess alternative parking options available to cyclists.
- Local politicians, such as the Free Voters party, have raised concerns about the installation of bike racks, voicing disappointment at their placement and overall utility.
