City council of Bergisch Gladbach experiences division
In the recent election held in Bergisch Gladbach, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has emerged as the strongest force, winning all 26 electoral districts directly and securing an additional seat through a complex calculation. The CDU candidate, Arne von Boetticher, secured a clear lead in the mayoral election with 41% of the votes.
The CDU's success comes amidst a significant loss of seats for the Greens, who, compared to the previous term, have lost a substantial number of seats. The SPD, however, is the second-placed party with 14 seats.
The municipal parliament will have 72 seats and will include nine factions or groups. The CDU and Greens, who have traditionally cooperated, will likely continue this partnership in the expanded city council, holding 40 of the 72 seats.
The runoff election for the mayor of Bergisch Gladbach will take place on September 28, with Alexander Felsch (CDU/FDP) and Marcel Kreutz (SPD/Greens) as candidates. The final election result is pending and will be decided in the runoff.
The race is close, with Alexander Felsch leading Marcel Kreutz by just 68 votes. In anticipation of the runoff, a "Speech Debate Felsch vs. Kreutz" is scheduled for Saturday in front of the castle steps at Schlossstraße in Bensberg.
It's important to note that forming a majority in the city council will be challenging due to the election results. Even a broad alliance of several parties, including the SPD, Greens, Left, Citizens' Party, FWG, FDP, and Volt, would not be enough to form a majority against the CDU.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has gained seats in the election, but remains far behind the state result with 10 percent. No candidates from Left, Citizens' Party, or Volt played a significant role in the election.
The results of the election are not yet final, but it is clear that the political landscape of Bergisch Gladbach will undergo changes in the coming term. Stay tuned for updates on the runoff election and the formation of the new city council.
