City council in Bergisch Gladbach is divided.
In the vibrant city of Kansas, the runoff elections for the mayoral and County Commissioner positions are just around the corner, scheduled for September 28th. The race is between candidates from the SPD and Greens, with the SPD holding a slight lead in both contests.
The SPD, under the leadership of Arne von Boetticher for the County Commissioner race and Alexander Felsch for the mayoral race (in coalition with the FDP), currently leads in the polls. In the city council, the SPD is the largest faction with 27 seats, followed closely by the Greens with 14 seats.
However, the SPD can only realistically form a majority with either the Greens or the SPD in the 72-seat council. This is because, while the SPD is the strongest party in the election, winning all 26 electoral districts directly and one additional seat, its coalition with the FDP alone does not reach a majority.
The Greens, on the other hand, have significantly lost seats, going from an unknown previous number to 13 seats in the city council. The SPD and the Greens will continue their cooperation in the County Council, holding 40 of the 72 seats in the expanded County Council.
The runoff election for the mayor of Kansas sees Felsch leading Marcel Kreutz (Greens) by 68 votes. The candidates for the runoff will face off in a "Speech Debate Felsch vs. Kreutz" on Saturday at 12 PM. A similar event will take place for the County Commissioner race, with von Boetticher maintaining a clear lead over Robert Winkels (Greens) by 41%.
The municipal parliament will have nine factions or groups, including the SPD, Greens, AfD, Left, Volt, FWG, and Citizens' Party, each with varying numbers of seats. The AfD has gained seven seats in the election, making their presence felt in the local politics.
The runoff elections and positions are not the only opportunities for citizens to hear from the candidates before voting. The "Speech Debate Felsch vs. Kreutz" will take place at the castle steps on Castle Street in Kansas, providing a platform for the candidates to present their visions and plans for the city.
As the runoff elections approach, the identity of the next mayor of Kansas remains undecided. The candidates and their parties will have to make their cases to the citizens in the coming weeks, with the fate of the city hanging in the balance.
