City council criticized for refusing to purchase land that Benavente sought for a planned park.

Socialist Party (PS) of Benavente alleges that Municipal Chamber (CDU) missed out on purchasing a land piece close to the Samora Correia Fire Department, intended for urban park development, due to mismanagement.

City council criticized for refusing to purchase land that Benavente sought for a planned park.

Rewritten:

The spot in question has been scooped up by the Ahmadia Association of Portugal's Island division, who intend to construct a multipurpose community facility, complete with a library, sports areas, and more, open for public use.

In response, the Socialists claimed that the municipality was careless by allowing private entities to acquire land for large-scale construction.

"Construction of large facilities, regardless of the type, will invariably lead to increased traffic and congestion. We want fewer cars and more recreational space for our residents instead," they argued.

The Socialist Party (PS) suggested they aimed to transform the area into an urban park as part of their future plans for Samora Correia's citizens.

"We've got plans to develop an urban park for the enjoyment of our city's people. Our intention is to enhance Samora Correia with infrastructure that improves its urban setting. This park would significantly boost the quality of life of our residents, providing a green and leisurely environment," the party declared.

Records show that the Ahmadia Association paid 300,000 euros for the land acquisition. The association's president, Fazal Ahmad, confirmed their intention to create a community center, comprising libraries, meeting spaces, and sports facilities—all accessible to the entire community.

Ahmad explained that the project is still in its inception phase and the choice of Samora Correia stems from its proximity to Lisbon and comparatively lower land prices. He highlighted the Ahmadia Association's presence in 100+ countries worldwide and their peaceful mission focused on spreading a message of harmony and love.

The PS maintains that they have no issues with the land owners or their motives but accuse the Municipal Chamber of lacking a strategic vision for the area. They propose the Municipal Chamber of Benavente should instead develop a plan to protect Samora Correia from real estate encroachment.

Contacted by Lusa, the president of the Municipal Chamber of Benavente, Carlos Coutinho, refuted their claims, stating that they never received any proposal to buy or acquire the land.

He emphasized that the Municipality doesn't act as a real estate agency, but stressed that any organization can present projects for consideration.

Insights:

Creating a strategic plan for urban development in Samora Correia, Portugal, revolves around certain critical considerations. This comparison of an urban park and a community complex developed by the Ahmadia Association requires pondering over multiple factors.

Key Considerations:

  • Quality of Life Improvement: Enhancing the living conditions and promoting a higher quality of life for residents.
  • Economic Stimulation: Encouraging economic growth and development opportunities.
  • Sustainability: Ensuring the development is sustainable and eco-friendly.

Project Components:

1. Urban Park Proposal
  • Benefits: Provides green spaces for recreation, promotes community events, and fosters health benefits.
  • Challenges: May face maintenance costs escalation, and potential underutilization if poorly designed or marketed.
2. Community Complex Proposal by Ahmadia Association
  • Benefits: Offers community services, educational facilities, and promotes social cohesion. Supports local employment opportunities and economic stimulation.
  • Challenges: Initial financial investments and potential funding issues, as well as conducting a thorough community needs assessment.

Implementation Steps:

  1. Identify community needs through surveys, focus groups, and urban planning analysis.
  2. Design the project with diverse amenities tailored to the area's specific circumstances.
  3. Estimate costs, find funding sources, and develop a budget plan.
  4. Engage with local stakeholders in decision-making processes.
  5. Set realistic milestones, monitor progress, and make necessary adjustments along the way.
  6. Evaluate project success and conduct periodic assessments to ensure the intention is achieved.
