City authorities have blocked access to the site where Almaty residents were reportedly drowning.
In the heart of Almaty, a sudden downpour on September 16th led to an unexpected incident. An aryk network at the intersection of Manas and Zhandosov streets was flooded, causing a small but significant disruption.
The flooded area required the vigilant efforts of local residents, who took it upon themselves to guard the site and prevent potential accidents. A woman in the video could be seen warning passersby about the flooded area, while a man was seen retrieving his phone from the water.
The incident sparked a heated reaction from social media users, with many praising the residents for their quick thinking and preventing a potential tragedy. However, the video's author criticized the city authorities for their actions or inactions, highlighting the need for improved drainage systems and emergency response.
Our correspondents visited the scene and spoke to local residents, who expressed their concerns about the inadequate drainage and the slow response from emergency services. They reported waiting for over an hour and a half for help to arrive.
Teams from GКP "Almaty Taza" were dispatched to the scene, where they cleaned the aryk, pumped out the water, and installed sandbags to prevent further flooding. The problematic area has since been cordoned off, and the Almaty Akimat announced plans to repair the Aryk network at the intersection, with the measures set to be implemented in September 2025.
The main cause of the flooding was identified as the asphalt covering, which hinders water runoff. In response, plans are underway to remove the asphalt and restore normal drainage in the affected area.
The incident serves as a small embodiment of bigger problems facing Almaty, including inadequate drainage and slow emergency response. As the city continues to grow and develop, addressing these issues will be crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
