German Book Prize 2025 Longlist Announced
The German Book Prize 2025 longlist has been unveiled, showcasing a diverse range of languages, narrative styles, and contemporary reflections. The jury, led by Laura de Weck from Swiss Radio and Television, selected 20 titles from a pool of 229 submissions for this prestigious award.
The nominated authors and their respective books, listed in alphabetical order, are:
- Kathrin Bach: Lebensversicherung (Verlag Voland & Quist, February 2025)
- Marko Dinić: Buch der Gesichter (Paul Zsolnay Verlag, August 2025)
- Nava Ebrahimi: Und Federn überall (Luchterhand Literaturverlag, September 2025)
- Dorothee Elmiger: Die Holländerinnen (Carl Hanser Verlag, August 2025)
- Kaleb Erdmann: Die Ausweichschule (park x ullstein, July 2025)
- Annett Gröschner: Schwebende Lasten (Verlag C.H.Beck, April 2025)
- Dmitrij Kapitelman: Russische Spezialitäten (Hanser Berlin, February 2025)
- Jina Khayyer: Im Herzen der Katze (Suhrkamp Verlag, July 2025)
- Jehona Kicaj: ë (Wallstein Verlag, July 2025)
Additional nominees include Michael Köhlmeier and others, bringing the total to 20 novels.
The longlist was chosen based on creative language, narrative perspective, and contemporary relevance, encompassing various themes such as dystopian tales and historical panoramas.
Annett Gröschner, who was also awarded the Mainz City Writer Literary Prize in April 2025, is among the nominees. Her book, "Floating Burdens," published by C.H.Beck, tells the life story of an East German crane operator. If she wins the German Book Prize 2025, it would be her second award in 2025.
The winner of the German Book Prize 2025 will receive 25,000 euros. The award ceremony, which will be broadcast live, is scheduled for 13 October 2025 in Frankfurt's Römer. Prior to the announcement of the winner, a shortlist of six titles will be chosen on 16 September 2025. Each finalist will receive 2,500 euros.
The Mainz City Writer Literary Prize, awarded since 1985, includes a right to residence in the city writer's apartment in the old town and the opportunity to make her own film with ZDF and 3sat. The winner of the Mainz City Writer Literary Prize in 2024 was author Julia Schoch.
The German Book Prize 2025 longlist was announced on Tuesday, 19 August, and the anticipation for the upcoming ceremony and the announcement of the winner is growing.
