Bárbel Bas Takes Aim at Exploitative Structures in Citizens' Money Distribution
Citizen's funds will be utilized to dismantle organized crime syndicates, as per Bas's plan.
In an interview with "stern," Federal Minister of Labor Bárbel Bas pointed out the existence of exploitative structures within the system of foreign workers being lured to Germany with false promises of employment, only to have them apply for citizens' money and have the funds skimmed off by unscrupulous intermediaries. Bas likened these practices to mafia-like activities and emphasized the need to stamp them out.
She further stressed the importance of a more rigorous data exchange system between financial authorities, job centers, family offices, and security agencies, combined with stricter checks on the legitimacy of benefit claims. "The system - and there are people who are picked up in a van and exploited as day laborers," Bas said.
With regards to the Citizen's Allowance (Bürgergeld), Bas confirmed that the government intends to maintain its current form but change its name. "The word for it is ultimately irrelevant," she added. The focus will be on reforms like adjusting the allowance to changes in prices and implementing faster sanctions for non-compliant recipients, while household situations with children will be given special consideration.
Bas outlined plans to evaluate relevant studies and reports, and present proposals for these reforms this year.
