Cities within Germany aim to provide shelter for children from Gaza and Israel
The cities of Düsseldorf and Hannover in Germany have announced their intention to take in particularly vulnerable or traumatized children from the Gaza Strip and Israel. This humanitarian initiative, supported by Düsseldorf's mayor Stephan Keller and Hannover's mayor Belit Onay, aims to provide protective care and trauma support for these minors.
Hannover has stated that it currently has up to 20 foster care places available, with potential for expansion through host or foster families. Düsseldorf, in line with Hannover, has expressed a similar desire to offer support and is currently engaging in discussions with local communities, including the Jewish community and Muslim groups, to explore the feasibility of this initiative.
Both cities are emphasizing the importance of community support and governmental cooperation to make this plan a reality. The initiative is part of a broader context of calls for peace and humanitarian support, reflecting earlier community efforts for peaceful coexistence between Jewish, Palestinian, and Muslim residents in Hannover and similar movements elsewhere in Germany.
Political parties, such as Die Linke, are encouraging other municipalities in Germany to join these humanitarian efforts, advocating for the reception of children affected by the conflict in Gaza and Israel.
In a statement, Amnesty International's local representative, Duchrow, highlighted the international community's, including Germany's, role in the Gaza War and the need for such humanitarian initiatives.
As both cities prepare to implement this program, they are committed to fostering a united community effort and seeking effective governmental aid to ensure the well-being of these children.
