In the bustling neighborhood of Little Village in Chicago, the annual Cinco de Mayo festivities have been axed for this year. This lively event, drawing tens of thousands each time, has been a staple for 45 years, featuring Mexican music, floats, and dances. But in 202x, the celebration has been silenced due to the chilling impact of Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.

Several communities across the nation have either canceled or scaled back cultural events as undocumented immigrants and even some US citizens feel an increased sense of dread, fearing public gatherings could lead to arrests and deportation.

Hector Escobar, head of the Casa Puebla and Cermak Road Chamber of Commerce, lamented, "We don't want to take a chance and put our community at risk. It's a loss economically, but safety is priority." This sentiment is echoed in other immigrant communities, as people avoid taking part in activities like attending church, going to work, or sending their children to school.

ICE has intensified its presence in so-called 'sanctuary' cities like Chicago, carrying out raids since January and even targeting schools and churches. More than 66,500 undocumented immigrants have been arrested since Trump took office, according to ICE data.

Derived from statistics by UnidosUS, a leading Hispanic civil rights organization, 43% of Latino voters say they fear being arrested by immigration authorities. This apprehension has spread beyond just the Latino community, as annual Juneteenth events have also been reduced or canceled due to fears of being targeted by the Trump administration's efforts to end diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

With profound fear sweeping through immigrant communities, cultural events that once brought people together have become rare occurrences.
