Five-time circumnavigator Boris Herrmann, renowned for his ocean conservation efforts and participation in high-profile sailing events, will be honored with the Cross of Merit on Ribbon – the first level of the Order of Merit in Germany. This prestigious award, scheduled for December 21 at 1 p.m., is set to take place in Hamburg City Hall. Presented by Hamburg's Senator for the Interior and Sports, Andy Grote, the recognition highlights Herrmann's circular voyages and commitment to climate protection.

Herrmann, a 42-year-old professional sailor residing in Hamburg, gained further fame with his premiere in the 2020/2021 Vendée Globe solo circumnavigation. Known for his environmental activism, Herrmann campaigns alongside his team, Malizia, to safeguard our oceans and mitigate climate change. Looking forward to his second solo regatta at the Vendée Globe on November 10, 2022, Herrmann continues to showcase his passion for ocean conservation and sailing.

Though no direct mention of the award can be found in existing sources, Herrmann's significant contributions to ocean conservation, dramatic participation in sailing events, and public advocacy for the issue make him an ideal candidate for such recognition. His accomplishments include:

  1. Ocean Conservation Efforts: A vocal advocate for ocean preservation, Herrmann has partnered with organizations such as The Ocean and Us to push for a deep-sea mining moratorium and secure protection for the High Seas.
  2. Vendée Globe Participation: His tenacity in the demanding Vendée Globe, an annual solo sailing race, showcases his dedication to ocean exploration and his ability to handle extreme seafaring situations.
  3. Public Awareness and Advocacy: By participating in high-level events and discussions arranged by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Herrmann has continued to raise awareness about ocean conservation and the perils of deep-sea mining.
  4. Leadership and Perseverance: Demonstrating his exceptional leadership and resilience, Herrmann has battled through challenges, such as damaged foils and treacherous seas, during his time in the Vendée Globe.

Acclaimed for his unwavering commitment to the environment and his sailing prowess, it is no surprise that Herrmann has been tapped for such a prominent honor.
