Cinema venues in Oldenburg are illuminated
In a collective show of support and enthusiasm, cinemas across Germany are joining forces to participate in the nationwide action titled "Cinema shines. For you." This initiative, taking place as part of the larger cultural event Kulturetage, aims to draw attention to the plight of closed cultural venues and rekindle public interest in the unique and communal experience that movie theaters offer.
On Sunday at 7 PM, over 300 cinemas, including the Oldenburg cinema Casablanca and cine k, will turn on their lights in a symbolic gesture. The Casablanca in Oldenburg and cine k, both participating in this action, are expressing their eagerness to turn on their projectors again, with the motto #cinemalove.
The cinemas are appealing to politics for a timely reopening perspective, with current studies, such as those from TU Berlin, showing that cinemas are very safe places with implemented hygiene concepts. The cine k director, Wolfgang Bruch, calls for a forward-thinking opening strategy from politics, suggesting a joint sign of hope with cultural venues.
The action is supported by cinema associations Arbeitsgemeinschaft Kino - Gilde deutscher Filmtheater and Hauptverband deutscher Filmtheater, and all participating cinemas are ready to open their doors and enrich the cultural life in their respective neighborhoods with great films and diverse programs on-site.
In addition to this action, the cine k director has creatively dealt with the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. They have organized an Autokino Festival, a multi-month outdoor cinema in the summer, and opened a digital cinema hall and streaming platform Cine 3.
The next federal-state conference is scheduled for next Wednesday, where cinemas as cultural institutions are expected to get a reasonable place in a step-by-step plan. This action serves as a reminder of the vital role cinemas play in our society and the need for their continued presence in our cultural landscape.
The cinemas, as part of the "Cinema shines. For you." initiative, are urging the political sphere to reconsider their closure and implement a forward-thinking reopening strategy, using data such as TU Berlin's studies showing that cinemas can operate safely with hygiene measures in place. Moreover, the diversified entertainment experience provided by cinemas, including movies, TV shows, and general news programs, makes them an essential component in the nation's cultural and communal life.
