Church scholar predicts Leon XIV to be a pope with significant political influence

Get the scoop on Pope Leo XIV, the new leader of the Catholic Church, from church historian Hubert Wolf's perspective. Here's what you need to know about this pragmatic "man of the middle" expected to bring about political change.

Leo XIV - A Consensus Candidate

Pope Leo was elected as a compromise candidate, according to Hubert Wolf, a church historian at the University of Münster, with a history of lesser favorites like Benedict XVI being elected swiftly. This hints that Leo XIV presented himself as a versatile and moderate candidate who could unite differing factions within the church prior to the conclave, flying under the radar of self-proclaimed Vatican experts.

Not the Next Francis

Leo XIV is unlikely to be a particularly progressive pope, Wolf predicts. "He is unlikely to push for radical changes in church and theology on women's ordination or married priesthood," said Wolf. "He is seen as a politically savvy, pragmatic, and non-ideological figure."

Although Leo XIV honored his predecessor Francis in his first public address as pope, signaling a sense of continuity, he also distanced himself, opting for a red shoulder cape and stole instead of the simple white attire of Francis. "Externally, he made it clear: I am not a carbon copy of Francis," said Wolf.

A Political Pope in the Making

Leo XIV, as Wolf foresees, will likely take a political approach. This is evident from his liturgical greeting: "Peace be with you" at the commencement of his relatively lengthy, handwritten speech.

A Checkered Past

Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of French, Spanish, and Italian descent, Prevost initially pursued mathematical studies before joining the Augustinian order in 1977. He was ordained a priest in Rome in 1982 and later earned a doctorate in Canon Law there. From the mid-1980s, Prevost was active as a missionary in Peru, establishing parishes, leading a seminary, and playing a role in training bishops.

In 2015, Pope Francis appointed him bishop of Chiclayo, a diocese in the north of Peru. In 2023, he rose to head the powerful Dicastery for Bishops - Vatican's office responsible for selecting bishops worldwide. The same year, he received the red hat.
