Declining Church Loyalty and Religiosity in Germany: A Shift in Perspective

Recent studies show a significant decrease in church loyalty and religiosity across Germany, according to the Evangelical Church in Germany's (EKD) sixth Church Membership Survey (SME). This trend was highlighted during the EKD synod meeting in Ulm.

The findings indicate that individuals are increasingly shaping their religious affiliations independently. Among the 5,000 surveyed between October and December 2022, 43% of the German population identified as non-denominational. Protestants and Catholics accounted for 23% and 25% of the population, respectively, while 9% belonged to other religious communities.

The decline in church loyalty and religiosity has not deterred Council President Annette Kurschus, who emphasized the importance of the church radiating hope and strength to attract members once more.

The report also suggested that both Protestant and Catholic church members expect their religious institutions to fundamentally change and engage in socio-political discourse. They believe their churches should no longer limit themselves to religious communication but should also comment on societal concerns.

Historical and socio-cultural factors contribute to this shift in religious sentiments in Germany. The Nazi-era's lasting impacts on the relationship between the state and the churches and the changing values and lifestyles of Germans over time are two key factors influencing the decline in religious affiliations.

As churches aim to remain relevant and attractive, they must address contemporary issues and demonstrate progressive stances on matters like social justice, human rights, and environmental protection. Greater transparency, accountability, and diversity within religious institutions have also emerged as expectations from members.

Evidently, the landscape of religious practices is evolving in Germany. Churches must adapt to this change to draw in new voices and maintain the loyalty of their existing members.
