Church in Cary donates over a quarter-million dollars to affordable living and childcare programs
In the heart of Cary, North Carolina, a significant development is taking shape. The Timothy Ash Carr Center, a $26 million project, is being built on land owned by Greenwood Forest Baptist Church. This mixed-use project is a collaborative effort involving The Carying Place, DHIC, the YMCA, Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, and the Town of Cary.
One of the most significant commitments to date for the Carr Center comes from St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cary. The church has donated over $300,000 to support the project, demonstrating its long-standing commitment to affordable housing. St. Paul's Episcopal Church has a history of advocating for affordable housing, including its leadership in the Episcopal Housing Ministry.
The Carr Center will offer 51 affordable rental units for workforce families with incomes between 30% and 60% of the area median income. Additionally, it will provide 11 transitional housing units for homeless working families served by The Carying Place.
The Carying Place, founded in 1993, empowers homeless working families with children to achieve long-term stability through transitional housing, financial literacy education, and life-skills training. To date, The Carying Place has served over 575 families and 1,500 children in Wake County, with a success rate of over 80%.
The Carr Center will also offer over 3,000 square feet of community-use program and office space for The Carying Place. This expanded space will enable The Carying Place to offer expanded financial literacy education, workforce development, and family support services.
The YMCA will also be a part of the Carr Center, providing youth programming. Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, an inclusive community of faith with a vision to be diverse and united in Christ, will also be involved.
