Chur Hosts Switzerland's Premier Marksmanship Festival After 40 Years
Chur is set to become the heart of Swiss marksmanship this summer as it hosts the Federal Swiss Shooting Festival (ESF). Running from June 5 to July 5, the month-long main event will draw around 36,000 shooters and 100,000 visitors. This marks the fourth time the city has staged the festival, the last being nearly 40 years ago in 1985.
The ESF will take over 19 outdoor shooting ranges across the canton of Grisons, offering 11 disciplines for participants. Unlike the 17 events held in 1985, this year's programme balances tradition with accessibility, including public shooting sessions open to all.
Behind the scenes, roughly 5,000 volunteers are contributing a total of 150,000 hours to ensure the event runs smoothly. The festival operates on a budget of 13 million francs, with about 4 million francs coming from sponsors.
Support for the event extends beyond logistics. A patronage committee featuring former elite athletes like biathlete Selina Gasparin and snowboarder Nevin Galmarini is helping to raise its profile. Both have spoken about their excitement, highlighting the festival's role in showcasing Grisons to a wider audience.
Martin Candinas, president of the organising committee and a National Council member, has stressed the scale of preparation involved. His team is working to deliver an event that blends sport, camaraderie, and Swiss tradition.
The ESF will transform Chur into a hub for marksmanship, tradition, and community engagement. With thousands of participants and spectators expected, the festival aims to leave a lasting impression on both the canton and Swiss shooting culture. The event's success will depend on the combined efforts of volunteers, organisers, and local supporters.
