Paul Mangal, aged 58 and hailing from the north side of London, received a 12-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, for stealing more than £3,000 worth of goods from a Waterstones store in Crouch End. This spree extended from April 2023 to February this year, making him a persistent offender.
This prolific shoplifter was spotted and caught thanks to an increase in police patrols and CCTV evidence gathered by The Metropolitan Police. They identified Mangal during a month-long operation and arrested him following a mid-theft incident reported by store staff in February 2025.
In court, Mangal pleaded guilty to 23 charges of theft. As a part of his punishment, Mangal was banned from entering Crouch End or Hornsey for two years and prevented from possessing a suitcase in either area.
Sergeant James Elliott, who led the investigation, expressed that shoplifting is a concern for both locals and businesses in Haringey. He stated that through improving relations with store staff and doubling the police presence, they managed to reduce thefts in the area by 35% since December 2024.
Future plans include implementing Live Facial Recognition (LFR) patrols and utilizing bicycle patrol units to deter and respond to shoplifting incidents more efficiently.
