Christmas storms topple trees, block major roads in Offenburg region
Strong winds over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day brought down trees across the Offenburg Police District. Several roads, including parts of the A5 autobahn, were blocked by fallen timber. Emergency crews worked quickly to clear the debris and restore access.
Overnight, heavy gusts toppled trees in the Acher and Rench valleys, as well as on higher ground near the B500. The A5 autobahn near the Appenweier interchange was also affected, forcing temporary diversions. Road maintenance teams and local fire departments responded to remove the obstructions.
Local municipalities and forestry offices took charge of clearing operations in their respective areas. Depending on the location—whether public land, forest, or roadside—agencies like the Garten- und Tiefbauamt or Gemeindeverwaltungen coordinated the effort. By morning, most routes had reopened, avoiding major traffic delays. No injuries or serious property damage were reported from the fallen trees. The swift action of volunteers and maintenance crews helped prevent further complications during the holiday period.
The incident caused temporary disruptions but was resolved without lasting consequences. Roads in the affected areas, including the A5 and B500, are now fully accessible. Authorities continue to monitor conditions as cleanup efforts conclude.
