Exploring the Magic of Christmas at the North German Nativity Museum

Get ready to immerse yourself in the enchanting world of "Nativity scenes - signs of peace" this holiday season at the North German Nativity Museum! Located in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Güstrow, this extraordinary exhibition is a must-visit. The museum highly recommends visiting during the evening hours, when the nativity scenes are beautifully illuminated, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

The North German Nativity Museum's tale begins with Mechthild Ringguth from Hamburg, who has dedicated 40 years of her life to collecting nativity scenes from around 60 countries. Now, her labor of love has grown into a breathtaking collection of over 700 nativity scenes spanning all continents. Since its opening in 2007, the museum has welcomed almost 73,000 visitors and continues to amaze visitors year-round.

Most of the nativity scenes showcase local artistry, with artists using native materials and their own Christian beliefs to bring the Christmas story to life. Among the museum's most unique creations is a tiny nativity scene made from a single sloe seed, just a few millimeters in size. The collection also features nativity scenes crafted from materials as diverse as amber, iron, waste paper, wool scraps, hoof nails, and finds from the Irish moors.

Stepping into the North German Nativity Museum during the Christmas season is a warm embrace of local customs merging with Christian beliefs. By day, visitors can marvel at the immaculately crafted nativity scenes. But an adventure awaits those who return during the evening hours when the cribs are illuminated, reminiscent of the magic of Christmas evenings.
