Who said animals can't indulge in some festive cheer? The keepers at Heidelberg Zoo have compiled a delightful "wish list" for their lovable residents, ensuring that no furry, feathered, or scaly resident goes unnoticed at Christmas.
"Mental and physical stimulation are essential to maintaining the health and wellbeing of our zoo animals. Overindulgence in comfort can harm them just as much as it does us humans," explains curator Sandra Reichler. So, the list includes an eclectic mixture of activities for everyone from the grizzly bears to the mischievous lemurs.
Bungee cords for the bears, food balls for the goats, and wooden toys for the lemurs are just a few items on the wishlist. The big cats, in particular, are partial to catnip and valerian, according to the zoo.
Good news for zoo enthusiasts, as every donation contributes to the existing budget, allowing the keepers to allocate funds to other essential projects. "It would be fantastic if we could fulfill a few wishes through these donations," said Klaus Wünnemann, the zoo director. Add tools, thermometers, and scales to the extensive wish list, which can be found on the zoo's website for those eager to donate.
Colorful food balls would add vibrant flavors to the diets of the goats, while the diverse selection of toys – including wooden ones for the lemurs – help keep the mental stimulation levels high for these busy, colorful critters.
