Christmas markets across Rhineland-Palatinate have drawn strong crowds this year, despite periods of wet weather. Visitors from abroad, including France, Belgium and the Netherlands, helped boost attendance in cities like Trier, while local traders reported steady sales in Mainz and Ludwigshafen.

Ludwigshafen kicked off the season early, opening its market on November 12. Large crowds gathered on the first days, especially during fireworks displays. However, heavy rain later led to a drop in footfall and spending, though vendors still described the season as satisfactory.

Trier’s market saw a noticeable rise in weekend visitors, with international tourists making up a significant portion. Many arrived via Moselle river cruises, and American travellers in particular were noted for spending generously. The city did not, however, hold the record for the earliest market opening in 2022. In Mainz, the market near the cathedral remained busy throughout the week. Vendors there reported sales matching or only slightly below last year’s figures. The consistent flow of visitors helped offset any losses from the rain.

Despite mixed weather, Rhineland-Palatinate’s Christmas markets have performed well overall. International tourists contributed to higher spending in Trier, while Mainz maintained steady trade. Vendors in Ludwigshafen, though affected by rain, still expressed general contentment with the season’s results.
