Christie's Hong Kong Auction Spotlights Record Demand for Korean and Contemporary Art
Christie's Asia Pacific is hosting its first major art event in Asia this year. The auction house, which marks its 40th anniversary in Hong Kong, will hold a spring edition of its 20th/21st Century Art sales. The event coincides with Art Basel Hong Kong and follows strong growth in demand for Korean and contemporary works.
The auction features top names like Gerhard Richter, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Among the highlights is Richter's Abstraktes Bild (1991), estimated to fetch between $10 million and $13 million. Founded in London in 1766, Christie's has seen rising interest from Asian buyers. In 2022, sales to Korean clients jumped by 29 percent compared to the previous year. This trend aligns with the broader expansion of the Korean art market, driven by international collectors and events like Frieze Seoul and KIAF Seoul.
Korean artist Kim Whanki's 19-VI-71 #206 (1971) made headlines in November 2022 after selling for $8.4 million at Christie's New York. The piece set the second-highest auction price ever for a Korean artwork. Meanwhile, Christie's London spring sales in early March 2023 reported a 58 percent increase in revenue from the same period last year.
Younger collectors are also shaping the market. In 2022, millennials made up 52 percent of new buyers in the 20th/21st-century art category. They accounted for 34 percent of total sales in that segment.
The Hong Kong event will showcase works by Sanyu, Zao Wou-ki, and Marc Chagall alongside Richter's leading lot. The auction reflects Christie's strategy to tap into Asia's growing appetite for modern and contemporary art. The spring auction in Hong Kong arrives as Christie's strengthens its presence in Asia. With record prices for Korean art and rising participation from younger buyers, the event highlights shifting trends in the global art market. The results will likely reinforce Asia's role as a key hub for high-value art sales.
