The Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), the esteemed event management company behind the Tour de France and numerous other international sporting events, has announced that the 2026 Tour de France will be held in Barcelona, Spain.

Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Tour de France, made this revelation at a roundtable discussion held at the French embassy in Berlin, on the occasion of the release of a book about the Tour de France. Prudhomme also confirmed that the first three stages of the 2026 Tour de France will take place on Spanish soil.

The decision to hold the prestigious race in Spain comes after the disruptions experienced during the 2025 Tour of Spain. Certain stages of the race were cancelled due to protests, specifically pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Prudhomme expressed his concerns about such disruptions, stating that they are a completely new phenomenon in the world of road cycling.

Prudhomme also acknowledged that road cycling races have always been subject to the ups and downs of life. He recalled instances of hooligans attacking Tour riders in the 1920s, demonstrating the resilience of the sport in the face of adversity.

It is worth noting that ASO is part of the Amaury group and also owns L'Equipe, a renowned French sports daily newspaper.

The 2026 Tour de France is scheduled to start in Barcelona and will be a new edition of the race. The exact dates have yet to be announced. However, with the initial stages taking place in Spain, cycling enthusiasts can look forward to an exciting start to the race.

The disruptions to the 2025 Tour of Spain seem to have impacted its organization and execution, but Prudhomme remains optimistic. He emphasised the need for negotiations when going somewhere, implying potential disruptions or challenges. Despite these concerns, Prudhomme is committed to ensuring a smooth and successful race in 2026.

The 2026 Tour de France promises to be an unforgettable event, bringing together the best cyclists in the world and showcasing the beauty of Spain and its cities. As the countdown begins, fans and cyclists alike can look forward to an exciting and challenging race.
