Golden Globes Hosting Refusals Amid Controversy
The Golden Globes, traditionally known for its A-list celebrities and star-studded annual ceremony, is once again in the search for a host. Famous names, including Chris Rock and Ali Wong, among others, have turned down the opportunity to moderate the event.
The nominations for the 2023 Golden Globes were announced last Monday, and the hunt for a host is still on going, as CNN reported. Among those declining the invitation to host the January 7 ceremony is two-time Oscar host Chris Rock, joined by at least four other top-tier comedians, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Rock, who was asked to host the Golden Globes last year, faced backlash for a joke made at the Oscars in 2022 that targeted Jada Pinkett Smith's alopecia, infamously remembered due to Will Smith's intervention. Rock is also being considered for a Golden Globe nomination in the best new category of stand-up comedy for his Netflix special "Chris Rock: Selective Rage."
Refusal Trend
Another candidate chosen for her stage performance in the Netflix series "Beef," Ali Wong, also declined her invitation to host the Golden Globes, according to a source familiar with the matter, as reported by Puck for the first time.
Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman, co-hosts of the popular podcast "SmartLess," also declined the offer to co-host the Golden Globes, confirmed two sources familiar with the matter.
Controversy and Response
Multiple high-profile comedians are not isolated in their decision to boycott the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony. In recent years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which governs the awards, has faced controversy and criticism, including allegations of bribery, lack of diversity among its members, and poor ethical practices.
The fallout of these controversies led to a significant backlash from the Hollywood community. In 2022, numerous celebrities boycotted the event, and NBC refused to air the show. In response, the HFPA disbanded, and the Golden Globes were taken over by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries.
The restructuring has reportedly helped dampen protests this year, as many prominent members eagerly await the event in the upcoming month. Despite the controversies, the Golden Globes are still considered an early indicator of the awards season, with big-name celebrities attending and a series of high-profile nominations.
This year, the Golden Globes will take place at CBS' new broadcast center, with a likely possibility of the network's own talent being chosen as the host to provide three hours of free advertising. With the prestigious award season underway, the Golden Globes are expected to bring Hollywood its usual glamour and celebration, despite the ongoing controversies and refusals from several top-tier comedians.
