CHP Supports İmamoğlu in Istanbul Rally
In a continuation of anti-corruption investigations, Turkish authorities have detained over 100 people, including high-profile figures from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and former mayors, in Izmir. This operation is part of an investigation targeting charges of rigging public tenders, fraud in the performance of obligations, and aggravated fraud within the CHP-led Izmir municipality.
The Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office issued detention warrants for 157 individuals affiliated with the CHP and the CHP-led Izmir municipality. So far, 102 to 120 have been detained in this operation. This crackdown follows a similar operation in Istanbul in March 2025, where around 100 officials, including then-Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, were detained on corruption charges.
The opposition views these detentions as politically motivated. CHP vice chair Murat Bakan stated that these arrests resemble those in Istanbul and claimed they were unnecessary legal measures targeted at the party members. The CHP's provincial head in Istanbul, Senol Aslanoglu, has also been detained in this separate probe.
It is important to note that the corruption investigation into the Istanbul Municipality is not related to the arrest and detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. The investigation into the Istanbul Municipality's construction company, IZBETON, is ongoing and separate from the probe involving Mayor İmamoğlu.
The latest developments show a continuation of anti-corruption probes targeting opposition-run municipalities in Izmir and Istanbul, with over 100 detentions in Izmir involving high-profile CHP figures and former mayors under serious fraud and tender-rigging allegations. Police are continuing efforts to locate and detain the remaining suspects as the investigation proceeds.
The latest developments in general news indicate a continuation of anti-corruption investigations and war-and-conflicts within Turkish politics, with over 100 detentions in Izmir involving high-profile figures from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and former mayors under serious fraud and tender-rigging allegations. This follows previous detentions of over 100 officials in Istanbul, including then-Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, on corruption charges, which the opposition views as politically motivated and part of the crime-and-justice system.
