Opposition Leader Poised for Persistent Protests in Turkey
- CHP leader Özel officially maintains position during extraordinary party meeting held in Ankara
Got some news for ya, folks! Özgür Özel, the man at the top of the CHP party, just got re-elected at their special bash in Ankara. And he ain't wasting no time!
Özel announced his plan to orchestrate protests, demanding the freedom of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the presumptive CHP presidential candidate for the 2028 race, who's currently behind bars. He highlighted three key events:
- Sunday Gathering: Kicking things off in the Black Sea city of Samsun. Get ready for a rally there, y'all!
- Wednesday Wave: Every week, starting this very moment, there'll be a demonstration in an Istanbul neighborhood. Mark your calendars for those!
- Coastal Cry: A passionate protest in Izmir is set to take place on May 19. Put that in your diaries!
You heard it right! The mayor of Istanbul, known for being Erdoğan's biggest rival, was popped on March 19 on allegations of corruption. He denies the charges, and his arrest has sent a wave of discontent across Turkey, reminiscent of the 2013 protests.
Özel made it clear that the goal is to collect signatures for İmamoğlu's release from at least half of the 61.4 million voters in Turkey. As of now, they've already pulled in 7 million signatures, so they're more than halfway there! Özel also asked for early elections by November at the latest during the party congress. Stay tuned for more updates from the hustle and bustle of Turkish politics!
