CHP faces "acrid" Eid celebrations amid detentions, according to Özel's account
In a bitter twist to this year's Eid al-Adha, CHP leader Özgür Özel mourned the celebration amid the mounting imprisonment of several of their mayors.
Özel spoke out in the western city of Manisa, expressing dismay over the judgment that sealed the imprisonment of five more CHP mayors on June 3, bringing the total number of detained mayors to 11.
"These holidays don't feel like holidays to us," Özel told reporters. "Many friends of ours, wrongfully and lawlessly locked up on baseless charges, sadly can't join us."
The Accusations
The CHP's concern comes amid allegations of misappropriation of funds involving municipal contracts, as these arrests form part of broader probes into financial crimes.
Opposition Responses
The CHP, along with other opposition leaders, sees these actions as politically motivated, an effort by the Erdoğan government to silence political rivals and erode local democratic gains. With Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, a potential presidential candidate in 2028, a target of these investigations, the CHP perceives this as a bid to weaken the party ahead of future elections.
Lack of Holiday Cheer
Traditionally, holidays are moments of unity and forgiveness. However, tensions this Eid al-Adha revolve around the ongoing imprisonment of CHP's mayors and their allies. The CHP opted to boycott inter-party Eid gatherings in protest of the arrests, echoing a similar boycott in March.
Angling for Elections
Özel also indicated a hope for early elections. "People of Türkiye deserve a smile," he said, vowing to work towards making that happen promptly.
Investigating Özel
Özel's criticism of Istanbul's chief prosecutor led to investigations against him earlier this week. In response, Özel asserted, "I stand by what I said. No one will make us suffer without reason, and those who do will regret it heavily."
Background
The Turkish government has been ramping up its crackdown on the CHP through arrests and dismissals of affiliated mayors. The case of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, detained in March on corruption charges, highlights the government's aggressive stance against political adversaries. With the removal of five district mayors from office on charges of financial misconduct, the total number of suspended or jailed CHP mayors stands at 11.
