"Chopin musical retreat": Polish mountain village hosts Chopin festival
In the picturesque town of Duszniki-Zdroj, Poland, the 80th edition of the International Chopin Piano Festival is currently underway, attracting classical music enthusiasts from around the globe. With a population of just 4,000 residents, the town transforms into a bustling hub of music, showcasing the legacy of Frederic Chopin.
Streets are adorned with posters and statues of Chopin, and shops welcome tourists with souvenirs bearing his image. The town, known as Bad Reinerz when Chopin gave his first concert abroad in 1826, carries a rich history that resonates with every note played during the festival.
This year, the festival is graced by the presence of two exceptional performers. Aristo Sham, a 29-year-old prodigy from Hong Kong, is launching his world tour at this festival after winning the 2025 Van Cliburn Competition. Julia Lozowska, a 23-year-old pianist from Warsaw, is another featured performer, known for her deep connection to Chopin's music. Lozowska has stated that she grew up with Chopin's music and considers him the composer she understands best.
Aristo Sham, during a rehearsal, was seen resting his eyes on a bust of Chopin, a testament to the reverence he holds for the great composer. Sham expressed his honor and privilege to perform in the same venue as Chopin and follow in his footsteps.
The festival is under the artistic direction of Piotr Paleczny, and it has attracted many of classical music's biggest names since its founding in 1946. Mike Righton, a 73-year-old from Texas, has been attending the festival for five years, and he shared his excitement about this year's lineup.
Approximately 2,000 spectators are expected over the nine-day event that runs until August 9. Among the festival's headliners this year is Aristo Sham, who won the 2025 Van Cliburn Competition, and Julia Lozowska, a pianist known for her profound understanding of Chopin's music.
