While breakneck speeds are not the rule, it's the relay events that earn Athletics World Championships (WM) tickets. In a Shanghai drizzle, the German squad delivers a mixed bag of results. Three quartets clinch their spots for the Tokyo games (September 13-21), two teams must retry, and a single squad makes its debut.

Lead by 9.99-second sprinter Owen Ansah, the German 4x100-meter relay team secures their spot. In the World Relays, they place second in 38.33 seconds, thanks to the combined efforts of Kevin Kranz, Yannick Wolf, Lucas Ansah-Peprah, and Owen Ansah.

The German women's 4x400-meter relay team also seals the deal with Skadi Schier, Johanna Martin, Mona Meyer, and Eileen Demes placing second—a boost from a favorable heat selection. The 4x100-meter women's team, consisting of Jessica-Bianca Wessolly, Nele Jaworski, Rebekka Haase, Sophia Junk, places third, but the quartet clinches their place with the sixth-fastest time at 42.98 seconds.

Sadly, the mixed 4x400-meter relay team and the men's 4x400-meter relay team, comprising Niklas Noah Klei, Friedrich Rumpf, Lukas Krappe, Fabian Dammermann, and Manuel Sanders, Annkathrin Hoven, Emil Agyekum, and Jana Lakner, respectively, must re-attempt qualification on Sunday, as they place fourth and sixth.

Rainfall drenched Guangzhou as teams vied for direct WM tickets to the World Relays finals. Teams that missed the cut will compete in three heats this Sunday (starting 13:34 CET), with two teams per heat advancing to Tokyo.

The German team bolstered their World Relays preparation at a Kuala Lumpur training camp. The exciting mixed 4x100-meter relay event, featuring women in the opening two legs and men in the finale, saw Germany finish fourth. The new event won't be featured at the Tokyo WM but will make its debut at the 2026 European Championships and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The team, consisting of Sina Mayer, Sina Kammerschmitt, Aleksandar Askovic, and Chidiera Onuoha, clocked in at 41.43 seconds in their debut race.
