Headline: High-Ranking Officials from China, Cambodia, and Thailand Hold Diplomatic Tea Talk to Address Cambodia-Thailand Border Conflict
In the city of Anning, Southwest China's Yunnan Province, on August 14, 2025, a significant event unfolded in the diplomatic arena. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, and Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa gathered for a tea talk aimed at reducing tensions and promoting peace between Cambodia and Thailand.
During the meeting, the primary topic of discussion was the ongoing Cambodia-Thailand border conflict. The three officials engaged in friendly and candid communication, expressing a mutual desire to end the conflict and resume dialogue to improve bilateral relations.
Key points discussed included both countries' willingness to engage in contact and dialogue, eliminate misunderstandings, rebuild mutual trust, and resume normal exchanges and cooperation. China offered support for these efforts, suggesting the implementation of the consensus from an extraordinary session of their General Border Committee to consolidate the ceasefire and clear mines and other activities in the border areas.
The role of ASEAN in mediating the conflict according to the "ASEAN way" was also emphasized, along with the importance of reopening border crossings as soon as possible. Wang Yi expressed optimism that Cambodia and Thailand, as "eternal neighbors and brothers," could manage specific disputes responsibly and work together on broader global and regional challenges.
Some reports suggest that the tea talk also included an exchange of views on the South China Sea issue. Both Cambodian and Thai ministers thanked China for its constructive role in facilitating dialogue, reaffirmed the importance of peace and good-neighborly relations, and committed to actively implement the ceasefire and dialogue mechanisms.
The tea talk was a symbolic event, reflecting peace, harmony, and amity, and serving as a valuable opportunity linked to the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting being held in Anning. The meeting underscored the importance of regional stability under the framework of Lancang-Mekong Cooperation and ASEAN involvement.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry took a photo of the tea talk, which is expected to be released soon. The exact location within the city of Anning was not specified. The roles and positions of the participants remained unchanged from their official titles: Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of China; Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Cambodia; and Maris Sangiampongsa, Foreign Minister of Thailand.
