Chinatown's Lion Dance Brings Luck and Unity for Lunar New Year

Washington, DC's Chinatown welcomed the Year of the Horse with a vibrant lion dance performance. The Hung Ci Lion Dance Troupe led the celebrations, moving through the neighbourhood to bring luck and blessings to local businesses. Crowds gathered as the troupe performed in front of more than a dozen shops and restaurants.

The lion dance is a traditional way to mark Lunar New Year. A large, brightly coloured lion head, operated by two performers, takes centre stage. One dancer controls the head while another moves the body, creating lifelike motions.

The troupe visited businesses across Chinatown, blessing kitchens, cash registers, and Buddha statues. At each stop, the lion 'ate' a head of lettuce and an orange before scattering the remains over onlookers. This ritual symbolises the spreading of good fortune.

Observers handed red envelopes filled with money to the lion, a gesture meant to attract luck for the coming year. The performance included non-Asian participants, reflecting the event's inclusive spirit. Most of the public programming was organised by the Chinatown Lunar New Year Coalition, part of the 1882 Foundation.

The celebrations will conclude with a parade on Saturday, February 22. The lion dance itself is believed to ward off evil spirits while inviting prosperity and happiness.

The event brought together residents and visitors to celebrate the new year. Local businesses received blessings, and the community shared in the cultural traditions. The parade on February 22 will mark the final day of this year's festivities.
