China's Music Ensemble marks its 60th anniversary with a charitable event, aiming to finance instruction and performance of classic Chinese music for every student involved.
Celebrating Chinese Arts and Culture: The Music of China Ensemble at UCLA
As the Year of the Dog is being celebrated for Chinese New Year, the spotlight shines on the Music of China Ensemble at UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music. Established in 1959 by the late Professor Tsun-Yuen Lui, this ensemble has been a beacon for promoting Chinese arts and culture at UCLA and in the greater Los Angeles community.
Under the current direction of Professor Chi Li, the ensemble continues to thrive, offering over 100 UCLA students from various departments the opportunity to study traditional Chinese instruments and perform Chinese music, folk dance, and opera. With a repertoire of more than thirty traditional Chinese instruments, students gain hands-on experience in keeping these cultural traditions alive within an academic environment.
The ensemble's integration within the Herb Alpert School of Music—renowned for its diverse and vibrant musical communities—provides a unique platform for the ensemble to complement other global music programs. By emphasizing active engagement with Los Angeles’s multicultural populations, the ensemble serves as both an educational and cultural bridge.
The student involvement in the ensemble not only preserves traditional Chinese musical arts but also promotes intercultural dialogue, education, and appreciation through performances and community outreach. These public presentations help introduce Chinese music and culture to broader Los Angeles audiences, contributing to the cultural diversity of the region.
The Music of China Ensemble Support Fund plays a crucial role in ensuring that UCLA students can continue to study and perform Chinese musical arts. Donations to this fund support the maintenance and repair of the Chinese instrument collection, as well as the ensemble's performances and community outreach activities. Your gift to the Music of China Ensemble Support Fund can help keep these cultural traditions alive and foster cross-cultural learning.
As the Music of China Ensemble celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, it continues to be a shining example of cultural exchange and appreciation. Let's join in celebrating this rich heritage and support the ensemble in its mission to promote Chinese arts and culture.
