Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spearheaded a momentous signing ceremony in Hong Kong on Friday, marking the establishment of the world's inaugural intergovernmental organization dedicated to mediation. The Convention on the Establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed) is set to serve as a global beacon for peaceful dispute resolution.
Most of the 33 signatories hail from Africa, including Algeria, Ethiopia, and Cameroon, as well as Asian nations like Pakistan, Laos, and Indonesia, alongside others from Latin America, the Caribbean, Oceania, and Europe.
Wang, China's top diplomat, highlighted the crucial role IOMed would play in addressing the "institutional gap" in international mediation. He envisioned the legal body as an "important public good" in the realm of the rule of law, fostering better global governance. The mediation center will aim to transcend the "zero-sum mentality," encourage diplomatic negotiations, and nurture more harmonious international relations.
The organization's headquarters, located at the former Wan Chai Police Station, is slated to open by year-end, as confirmed by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu.
