China's AI video mocks Trump's Latin America summit with bold satire

China has released an AI-generated video mocking former US President Donald Trump's recent Shield of the Americas Summit. The animated clip, shared by China's Embassy in the US, depicts a bald eagle trapping Latin American nations in a cage. The move comes as trade between China and the region continues to grow, despite US efforts to counter Beijing's influence.

The summit, held days before the video's release, aimed to build a regional military coalition in Latin America. Trump used the event to warn about China's expanding role, repeating a false claim that Beijing 'operates' the Panama Canal—a statement already dismissed by Panama's courts as baseless.

China's economic ties with Latin America have deepened over decades. The country remains a key trading partner for many nations, financing major projects like Peru's Chancay mega-port. Between January and November 2025, Chinese exports to the region rose by 9.3% compared to the same period in 2024.

Even US-aligned governments maintain strong commercial links with Beijing. Argentina, led by pro-US President Javier Milei since December 2023, has kept its economic relationship intact. Soybean exports to China continue, and a $20 billion currency swap with China's central bank remains in place. Argentine imports from China surged by 57.1% in 2025, though specific details on machinery or electronics trade remain unclear.

The video, titled Shield of the Americas, or Shackles of the Americas?, was produced by China's state news agency Xinhua. It portrays Latin American countries as white doves caged by a bald eagle in a suit—a clear jab at US influence. The animation follows Trump's summit, where he pushed for a united front against China's growing presence in the region.

Panama's high court previously ruled that any Chinese control over the Panama Canal was illegal. Yet Trump has repeatedly raised the issue, using it to argue for stronger US-led cooperation in Latin America. China's response, through the video, underscores the ongoing rivalry for influence in the region.

The video highlights China's confidence in its economic foothold across Latin America. Trade data and ongoing projects show no sign of a slowdown, even as the US seeks to rally regional allies. With legal rulings and political shifts doing little to alter commercial ties, Beijing's role in the region appears firmly established for now.
