China withdraws diplomatic relations with Czech President Petr Pavel due to his encounter with the Dalai Lama

China has suspended all ties with Czech President Petr Pavel following a meeting with the Dalai Lama in India on July 27, 2025. Beijing views this encounter as a serious violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, has lived in exile in the Himalayan town of Dharamshala since fleeing Chinese rule in Tibet in 1959. China considers the Dalai Lama a separatist, threatening its territorial unity.

Pavel, who met the Dalai Lama privately to congratulate him on his 90th birthday, separated from his delegation during his return from a working visit to Japan to make the visit. This meeting was interpreted by Beijing as a direct affront.

China's Foreign Ministry lodged formal protests with the Czech side, stating that Pavel's meeting harmed China's sovereignty. The Chinese government has decided to cease all engagement with Pavel, although it continues broader diplomatic relations with the Czech government.

The Czech presidency, while largely ceremonial, is a prestigious post. The late Czech President Vaclav Havel, the nation's first post-communist leader, was also a friend of the Dalai Lama.

Relations between China and the Czech Republic have been strained in the past, including when Pavel had a phone call with Taiwan's then-president in 2023, which also angered Beijing. The Czech Republic maintains robust informal contacts with Taiwan, which Beijing views as its own territory despite Taipei's rejection.

The Czech Republic has also banned Chinese AI startup DeepSeek in government work over cybersecurity concerns.

As of now, the Czech presidential office has not responded to Beijing's statement. The cause of this diplomatic strain remains the meeting with the Dalai Lama, which triggered the diplomatic rupture at the presidential level due to China's stringent policy on Tibet and its sensitivity to any official recognition of the Tibetan spiritual leader by foreign officials.
