China Poised to Benefit as U.S. Withdraws from U.N.
The United Nations (U.N.) is currently facing a significant challenge as it grapples with a pre-existing budget crisis, exacerbated by recent funding cuts from several key donors. Amidst this turmoil, China's support for the U.N. remains notable.
According to a former Chinese U.N. official, writing in China Daily, China has been a steadfast supporter of the U.N., upholding global values while other nations, such as the United States, appear to be pulling back. However, concerns have been raised about China's approach to multilateral efforts, particularly in areas of labor rights, minority rights, and other sensitive issues.
Reports suggest that Chinese officials are seizing the opportunity presented by the U.N.'s financial struggles to diminish human rights work. This trend is evident in meetings held in Geneva, where China has joined forces with Cuba, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela to propose scaling back human rights inquiries.
The U.S., on the other hand, has significantly contributed to the U.N.'s financial woes by cutting funding for the organisation and international aid agencies like the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). These cancellations have caused widespread cuts in the U.N. budget, leading to a severe budget crunch.
Despite these challenges, China continues to support the U.N.'s global governance endeavors. Interestingly, China utilises the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as an international platform to strengthen its influence through security-political and economic cooperation, aiming to build a new world order with alternative international structures, such as the planned SCO Development Bank.
China's stance on the U.N. is not without controversy. Alongside Cuba, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela, China has proposed saving money by scaling back human rights inquiries at the U.N. This proposal has raised concerns about the potential erosion of human rights standards within the U.N.
As the U.N. navigates these challenging times, it remains to be seen how the organisation will balance the need for financial stability with its commitment to upholding human rights and democratic values. The world watches with anticipation as the U.N. strives to maintain its role as a global arbiter of peace and justice.
