China issues caution to Papua New Guinea concerning Australian defense pact
In a significant development, Australia and Papua New Guinea have agreed on the text of a treaty that commits both countries to defending each other from armed attacks. The treaty, which will be signed after cabinet processes in both countries following a delay this week, appears to be a response to China's growing influence in the region.
The treaty is a clear indication of the strengthening defence ties between the two nations. Prime Minister James Marape of Papua New Guinea has announced that his Defense Minister, Billy Joseph, will travel to China to discuss the agreement.
However, China's embassy spokesperson in Port Moresby has issued a warning to Papua New Guinea against undermining its interests and sovereignty in relation to the mutual defense pact with Australia. The spokesperson also urged Papua New Guinea to maintain mutually beneficial cooperation with China and uphold independence and self-reliance.
Beijing's economic support in the Pacific has led several Pacific nations, including Solomon Islands, Kiribati, and Nauru, to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favour of China. This has raised concerns about China's growing influence in the region.
In response, Australia has increased its engagement with the Pacific region. The treaty between Australia and Papua New Guinea states that any activities, agreements, or arrangements with third parties would not compromise the ability of either party to implement the Treaty, a clear reference to China.
The text of the treaty also states that the two nations will respect each other's rights to strike deals with other countries, but the deal should not be exclusive or restrictive. This suggests a balanced approach towards maintaining diplomatic relations with all key players in the region.
The treaty between Australia and Papua New Guinea marks a significant step in the region's geopolitical landscape. As China continues to invest billions of dollars in Pacific nations over the past decade, funding various public works, it remains to be seen how other nations in the region will respond.
