Tech-Powered Propaganda: How China's AI Machines Spread Deception Against Taiwan

China increasingly leverages artificial intelligence to propagate misinformation regarding Taiwan

Hang out online, and you might just step into a warzone. According to Taiwan's intelligence agency, China is waging a silent war, deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to churn out lies that could destabilize Taiwan. Over half a million posts, barely believable, have surfaced this year on platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and local forums.

Bolstered by China's insatiable desire to reclaim Taiwan as a part of its territory, the island democracy continues to fight off cyber-attacks, spying, and flooding the internet with propaganda. The latest weapon in the arsenal? AI-generated disinformation.

A shiny new AI-powered platform, built for monitoring and analyzing digital content, has pinpointed a spike in suspicious posts. Beijing has named this effort a "cognitive warfare," flooding Taiwan's digital landscape with thousands of deceptive messages, often disguising them as genuine content from neighbors, journalists, or even Taiwanese officials.

This year, an alarming number of 510,000 posts have been identified, far outstripping the 442,652 posts detected in the first quarter of 2024. These posts usually swirl around controversial topics like security policy and Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, agitating public opinion and stirring turmoil. What's more, over 3,600 fishy accounts popped up on Facebook and TikTok alone, spreading the falsehoods even faster and wider.

But China's not stopping at merely flooding social media. They are using AI to crank out deepfakes of Taiwanese officials, making it almost impossible for fact-checkers to keep up. And since the AI tech allows for rapid content creation and dissemination, China could leave Taiwan scrambling in the dust, while the lies spread like wildfire.

Caught in the crossfire is Taiwan's social fabric. China's AI-backed disinformation efforts aim to sow division and create chaos, eroding Taiwan's unity and stability.

In response to China's AI-powered disinformation campaign against Taiwan, the community policy and employment policies of social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok are under scrutiny, requiring more stringent measures to monitor and address deceptive content. With elections approaching in 2024, the Taiwanese government is bolstering its own digital policy to counteract AI-generated disinformation, particularly on controversial issues such as the nation's security policy and President Lai Ching-te. Amidst this battle of AI-powered deception, the Taiwanese government is also combating deepfakes created by China to mislead citizens and erode the nation's unity and stability.
