China took a significant step towards resolving the ongoing regional conflict between Thailand and Cambodia by hosting a trilateral meeting in Shanghai on July 30. The meeting, which was led by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, brought together representatives from both countries.

The meeting was part of China's ongoing diplomatic efforts to mediate and foster mutual understanding between neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. In recent months, China has been actively involved in the ceasefire talks between Thailand and Cambodia, acting as a co-facilitator alongside U.S. envoys and Malaysia.

The resolution of the border dispute was a topic of discussion during the meeting. Both Thailand and Cambodia expressed their intention to uphold the ceasefire agreement, which was initially agreed upon on July 28, 2025, following intense border clashes and negotiations held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Despite earlier accusations of ceasefire violations by both sides, they reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire in subsequent meetings, including an informal meeting hosted by China in Shanghai.

The Thai government is facing criticism over the ceasefire terms, with claims that it led to the loss of the Ta Kwai temple. However, both Thailand and Cambodia confirmed their commitment to continuing the ceasefire agreement. Thailand has also deployed South Korean-made guided bombs in combat use against Cambodia for the first time, and an EOD team destroyed a Cambodian BM-21 rocket found on a road near a civilian area in Sisaket.

The meeting's outcome was reported on the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, and both Thailand and Cambodia expressed their gratitude towards China for its role in resolving the regional conflict. The meeting was described as "sincere, frank, friendly, and full of unity."

Further dialogues on the border issues have been planned to continue in Kuala Lumpur in August 2025, with China continuing to be involved diplomatically. The State Railway is standing firm on Khao Kradong land protection, offering lease terms to current occupants. Meanwhile, Thailand is deploying a mental health crisis response as 267 border residents are at suicide risk due to the ongoing conflict.

As the situation continues to evolve, China's constructive role in resolving the Thai-Cambodian border disputes peacefully remains crucial. The trilateral meeting in Shanghai was a significant step towards resolving the regional conflict and maintaining peace in Southeast Asia.

The trilateral meeting in Shanghai, involving representatives from Thailand, Cambodia, and China, addressed not only the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border dispute but also extended to other aspects of policy-and-legislation, such as health. In light of the mental health crisis among border residents, the meeting acknowledged the urgent need for a comprehensive solution that prioritizes general-news and welfare. As diplomatic efforts continue, China's role as a co-facilitator in policy-and-legislation and general-news pertaining to the Thai-Cambodian border dispute will remain essential.
