China asserts allegations of harassment towards them at New Zealand's airport

In a recent development, China's embassy in New Zealand has lodged a complaint with Wellington's Foreign Ministry, expressing disapproval over the alleged harassment of Chinese citizens at New Zealand airports.

The incident, which occurred on September 16, involved a Chinese citizen transiting at a New Zealand airport who was subjected to harassment and interrogation without cause by the country's security and intelligence agency personnel. The personal digital devices of the individual were also confiscated.

The embassy has reported several similar cases of Chinese citizens experiencing such treatment during entry or transit in New Zealand. Beijing has expressed its disapproval of the conduct, stating that the seizure of electronic devices constitutes harassment.

However, New Zealand's intelligence agency has claimed that any steps taken were in accordance with the law and under robust independent oversight. The independent oversight of the agency's control over Chinese nationals arriving in or transiting through New Zealand is conducted by the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS), a statutory authority established to monitor the activities of New Zealand's intelligence agencies.

The Foreign Ministry of New Zealand, on the other hand, has stated that these laws are applied in a non-discriminatory manner. Wellington has insisted that all people entering the country must abide by laws and regulations, which include national security and border security.

The embassy has reserved the right to make further responses, and the matter is currently under investigation. It is hoped that this issue will be resolved amicably to maintain the strong diplomatic relations between the two countries.
