China Analyzes Spanish Climate Strategy in Doñana
A delegation from China’s Jiangxi province recently visited Spain to explore climate strategies and ecological restoration. The group, representing the Department of Ecology and Environment, focused on the Doñana Natural Area in Huelva. Their trip included workshops, site visits, and discussions on wetland conservation.
The delegation arrived in Seville to exchange knowledge on climate adaptation and wetland protection. They attended workshops where Spanish and Chinese experts shared best practices in combating environmental challenges.
In Almonte, the group observed the €6 million restoration of the Los Mimbrales estate. Funded by the EU’s Next Generation programme, the project aims to renaturalise nearly 900 hectares around Doñana National Park. The work will improve the area’s hydrological balance and boost ecological connectivity. Particular interest was shown in Spain’s governance model for Doñana, led by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO). The delegation examined how nature restoration and socioeconomic development are being balanced. They also studied Spain’s State Pact Against the Climate Emergency, which emphasises scientific research, cross-agency cooperation, and forward planning. Jiangxi province, home to 45 million people, is working on similar climate adaptation plans for Poyang Lake. As China’s third-largest freshwater wetland, Poyang Lake plays a key role in bird migration, much like Doñana. The visit aimed to gather insights for their own conservation efforts.
The exchange highlighted shared challenges in wetland management and climate resilience. Spain’s approach, combining EU funding, scientific research, and policy coordination, provided a model for Jiangxi’s ongoing work. Both regions continue to develop strategies for protecting vital ecosystems.
