In a delicate dance of diplomacy, the Philippines finds itself caught between its longstanding commitment to the One-China Policy and its geographical proximity to Taiwan, a potential flashpoint for conflict between China and the United States.

During a recent visit to India, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. acknowledged that the Philippines, due to its close ties with Taiwan and the presence of many Filipinos there, could not remain neutral if a conflict were to erupt over the island. He warned that the country would be "dragged kicking and screaming" into any war over Taiwan, emphasizing the need for preparation and humanitarian concerns about evacuating Filipino nationals from the conflict zone.

China, however, has responded critically to the Philippines’ defense posture. Beijing accused the Philippines of "playing with fire" over this issue, likely referring to its vocal stance and potential preparations for involvement in a Taiwan conflict. Despite this, the Philippines reaffirms its adherence to the One-China Policy while maintaining economic and people-to-people ties with Taiwan.

Relations between the two nations have been strained in recent years, particularly over territorial disputes in the South China Sea. In June 2022, a friction occurred when China's coast guard drove away a Philippine ship around Scarborough Shoal. Both countries have traded accusations of aggressive maneuvers and sovereignty violations in the region.

The South China Sea is believed to be rich in oil and gas reserves and is a significant trade route, carrying trillions of dollars of sea-borne trade. The Philippines, cognizant of its national interests, has been strengthening relations with the US and other countries to counter China's claims in the South China Sea, which were invalidated by an international arbitration ruling in 2016.

President Marcos has also emphasized the need for the Philippines to defend its territory and sovereignty, especially given the risk posed by conflict so near its borders. This stance has been met with concern from China, which views democratically-governed Taiwan as its territory and has never renounced the use of force to seize it.

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te and his government strongly object to China's sovereignty claims, stating that it is up to the island's people to decide their future. Beijing, in turn, criticizes the Philippines for using humanitarian concerns as a pretext for intervening in Taiwan, stating it violates international law and the ASEAN charter, and undermines regional peace and stability.

The Philippine foreign ministry has contingency plans for a Taiwan emergency, but did not provide specifics. As the situation remains fluid, the Philippines continues to navigate a delicate path, seeking stability and peaceful dialogue while preparing for potential conflicts that may involve its national interests.
