US President Trump Accuses China of Breaching Trade Agreement

WASHINGTON D.C. — US President Donald Trump has accused China of failing to adhere to the terms of a recent trade agreement. This agreement, announced three weeks ago, led to a reduction in mutual tariffs between the two nations. Despite this agreement, the US trade deficit with China remains extensive.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his disappointment, claiming that China had "completely broken its agreement with us." He did not specify the breached provisions. Prior to this post, Trump had written of a "swift deal" with China that had been met with satisfaction; this agreement was to have economic benefits for both nations.

The US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, similarly stated that China is "slowing and throttling... critical minerals," thereby maintained the US trade deficit. Greer made these comments on the CNBC network.

Trade talks between the US and China had supposedly "stuck" according to comments made by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on the Fox News network. It was suggested that President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may need to intervene personally to progress negotiations.

The US and China reached a temporary truce in the ongoing trade dispute regarding tariffs in Switzerland. This agreement involved reductions in tariffs for both nations, with the US reducing tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, and China reducing tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%. This arrangement was set to last for an initial period of 90 days.

At the time, Trump described this agreement as a "complete restart" with China and posted of a "very good" relationship with the country. However, recent developments have cast doubt on this positive outlook.

In related news, the US government has hardened its stance towards China, including the potential revocation of visas for Chinese students studying in the US and tightening of future applicant rules. The exact number of students affected and any potential exceptions remain unclear.
