Children of Valerio Berruti captivate Milan society
Valerio Berruti's "More Than Kids" Exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan
Valerio Berruti's latest exhibition, titled "Monumental concrete sculptures, sequential drawings, installations, and videos," is currently on display at the Palazzo Reale in Milan. The exhibition, running from July 22 to November 2, 2025, is the largest solo show dedicated to Berruti and presents a rare poetic journey, making him a significant artist in the contemporary art scene.
The exhibition features a collaboration between Berruti and renowned Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi, resulting in the creation of "Nina's Merry-Go-Round." This unique installation invites children to complete the story, as the sparrows will fly away. The musical part plays a significant role in "Nina's Merry-Go-Round," with Einaudi contributing the soundtrack.
"Nina's Merry-Go-Round" is not just a literal carousel but also a metaphorical vehicle within Berruti’s "More Than Kids" project. The duo of Berruti's installation and Einaudi’s music creates an extraordinary experience within the exhibition. The merry-go-round features sparrows instead of horses, symbolising the innocence and resilience of childhood.
The thematic core of the exhibition is childhood, depicted as a universal, collective metaphor for possibilities, innocence, resilience, and hope. Berruti’s figures convey a suspended moment in time, symbolising wider human experiences and pressing contemporary issues such as climate change and social change.
Ludovico Einaudi's original music compositions serve as soundtracks to some of the key works within the show, including "Nina's Merry-Go-Round." The music creates an immersive emotional backdrop that invites visitors to engage more deeply with the visual and physical aspects of the art, blending sound and visual storytelling.
The exhibition also integrates sound works by artists like Paolo Conte, Daddy G (Massive Attack), and others, situating Einaudi’s compositions within a broader, diverse sonic landscape enriching the exhibit's sensory narrative.
In the darkness of a room in the exhibition, a piece titled "A safe place" is displayed, depicting an ordinary object like a life preserver transforming from a toy for privileged children into a lifesaving tool for refugee children. This piece challenges viewers to reflect on the complexities and realities of childhood, both for privileged and refugee children.
The exhibition presents unique pieces such as the large sculpture "Don't let me be wrong" placed in the corner of the courtyard of honor. These pieces continue Berruti's interpretation of themes related to childhood and beyond, offering visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in his vision and artistic interpretation.
